We all know that jobs are in high demand. People need them and there aren’t as many to go around. What to do? Have you considered freelancing?
Sure its only part-time work and it may not involve all of the perks like...insurance and stability, but its money. Freelancing also allows you to build your own schedule (which allows you to still interview for full-time gigs in the meantime). Freelance jobs can be a great 
way to makes ends meet while playing the inevitable “try-to-get-hired-in-a-recession” game.
There is one catch...not all skills are in demand. Over the past few months we have seen some industries literally come to a stand still. Contract positions are lending themselves more toward the online space, so if you work in online marketing, advertising or website design, now might be the time to go freelance.
Elance.com, the popular freelance-focused community, has given their annual poll and the results are in for the “Top 100 Freelance Skills in Demand." Which skills emerged the winners? Basically anythingl to do with online marketing, websites and content development. Shocker I know. It’s true…its all moving online. Elance published this summary statement:
“The Elance Online Work Index reveals that businesses are actively pursuing candidates who have design, computer programming, technical, online marketing, research, writing and administrative skills. Companies that are hiring online professionals to supplement existing staff are seeking expertise in Graphic Design, PHP, MySQL, Article Writing, HTML, Adobe Illustrator, WordPress, Photoshop, Flash, Search Engine Optimization and Blogs.”
Do you know how to write content for the web? How about optimize or monetize a website’s performance? Well you are in luck. You have an excellent opportunity to make some extra cash. Although there is money to be made, there is also a whole other world of challenges to consider like pricing, time delegation, and prioritizing. A freelance career is great for some, but not for all.
One thing is certain—it is definitely a creative solution to the recession we are all facing. After all…when better to try something new then when the old doesn’t seem to be working?

It's a bit of a misconception
It's a bit of a misconception that freelance work is necessarily part-time and not sustainable as a livable income. Freelancing isn't necessarily something that you do "while playing the inevitable try-to-get-hired-in-a-recession game."
For me, freelance writing is a full-time career and I have found a lot more success (and income) with the freelance route than I have ever experienced with a conventional full-time job. Freelancing is by no means easy, but it's perfectly viable if you're willing to put in the effort.
