Certainty in Uncertain Times: Hyundai's Promise
Now, I am not one to post on a whim. I’m surely not one to post my sentiments on a particular subject, but today I am making an exception. I was sipping my coffee, tweeting away when Hyundai’s new commercial with the byline “Certainty in Uncertain Times” came across my screen. You know those moments…when you stop mid-conversation, or mid-activity to absorb something, well (without going all emo on you) that is what happened with this commercial.
For those of you who haven’t seen it yet. Here is the deal. Hyundai has vowed—“If you buy a car from them and lose your income in the next year you can return it.” Yeah, crazy huh? Maybe I am just a sentimental fool or a hopeless believer but something about that commercial made me realize—we really are all in this together.
Since writing for TheOnlineBeat I have been (happily) bombarded with stories of job loss, job searching, and the support systems people have found along the journey. In fact, I have asked a few brilliant bloggers to join me here in the upcoming weeks to write of their stories, and how their career focused blogs have transitioned since the economic downturn (stay tuned for more on that). For now, I just felt the need to take a break from resume guides, networking advice, and interviews. Instead I wanted to post on what I call “the forgotten silver lining” –the support that surrounds a troubled nation.
The marketer in me is well aware of the angle Hyundai is playing, but I also can’t help but smile when I picture that marketing pitch meeting, and someone saying “Lets do something to help, something to give peace of mind to the people facing a job loss.”
What have you done to help ease the minds of those around you that are facing a job loss, or just experienced one? If ever there was a time to make the "hi, its been a while" phone call or send an actual snail-mail card (you remember those right?) with positive words…now is the time people. Sometimes (even on a job search site) it’s important to stop worrying about where the next job is and remember that behind all of these unemployment stats, and the job loss chaos there are people…people just looking for “Certainty in Uncertain Times.”

There was an article in the Denver post about this on Sunday. Self employed individuals will be happy to learn that the promo would include them if they filled for a small business bankruptcy. Basically hyundai is purchasing loan insurance for all their customers, and if you loose your job the bill is covered by Great American Insurance Group. It isn't bad enough that you bet against yourself when you purchase insurance, the dealership who sold you the car is betting against you now too. Is there no optimism left in this country.

The company wouldn't be sending the repo man, the banks would. I think its a good way help all around.

Isn't it cheaper for them to make people feel good about being allowed to bring their car back as opposed to sending the repo man after them?
Not to be a party pooper but.......

I had similar thoughts when I first saw the commercial. The two problems that I see with Hyundia's promo are that this doesn't apply to self employed people and two, you would have to drive a Hyundai.

My husband lost his job after 9/11 (he worked for a trading company) and was unemployed for 8 months. I was home with our infant son at the time, and it was tough.
We had many, many people reach out to us, with cards, phone calls, encouragement, prayers, even money. It kept us going!
Thank you for the reminder. It's so true.
