My First Motivational Monday Moment Goes to...Dan Schwabel
Damn it. I’m tired of being sad. I spend all week reading stories of job loss, cutbacks, and scary statistics and because I am a blogger for a career site I also spend all week writing on job loss, cutbacks and scary statistics. I’m not looking for your sympathy, I was the one that chose it. The thing is I chose to start a job site because I wanted to give some of you something to smile about; I wanted to remind you its not all about “just getting by” but instead there is something miraculous to be found in the middle of this economic chaos…the opportunity for change.
Some of you just closed the window, and others moved into “glaze and skim mode” but some of you know exactly what I mean. Sometimes when you are surrounded with nothing but unfortunate circumstances you have nothing to lose. You can take the biggest risk of your life without a rear-view mirror check. It’s liberating.
That’s what I want this blog to be about. I try to spotlight new sites and resources that give job seekers an advantage, and introduce you to people and communities that will stimulate your creativity. It's here to remind each of you that we are all in this together. I’m hoping that even though so many of us have lost our job, instead of burying our heads in our hands, we will take this shock and use it’s energy to finally make some moves.
The other night I was tweeting away, and I had one of those…moments. You know…the one where you are putting along, reading some, ignoring others, and then BAM—you read a tweet that catches your eye. You read it again, you re-tweet it, you DM the person to tell them how much you agree, and you…(gasp!) star it. Yup…you favorite it so you don’t forget it, so it can last forever in some virtual world of recognition.
Well that is exactly what I did. Dan Schwabel, a leading personal branding expert (and one of my favorite bloggers, tweeted a beautiful bitch-slap moment. He wrote:

...The Job Of Your Dreams. How true it is. What if all of this job loss and repositioning is really the moment of change you have been waiting for? What if this is the opportunity you have been working toward?
Because of this one tweet I have decided to change things up here at The Online Beat. I have decided that Monday blog posts will no longer report the weekend’s layoffs. There will be no more stress filled summaries of the economical situation, no more heart-saddening statistics…instead Monday blog posts will be—motivational.
I will be keeping tab all week on tweets that deserve the spotlight. So many of you encourage each other to keep working toward the end goal, and so many of you have helped each other simply by tweeting the right thing at the right moment. Every Monday I will be tipping my blogger hat to one of you.
Tips virtual hat to Dan Schwabel.
Now, I know when it comes to turning a job loss into an opportunity its easier said then done. But I also know that most great things in this life are exactly that…easier said then done. Perhaps its time to take all of that hard work of yours and channel it toward a new opportunity, toward a new you…the one you’ve been waiting to be.
