One of the most competitive job landscapes has to be management and manager positions. So many people work through years of entry-level positions in hopes of finally having their resume land them a management position. These types of jobs involve so many demands—you have to be a leader, organized, well-established and connected in an industry, good with office politics and a strong communicator. In addition, you often need to understand the dynamics of many personalities as you never know who will be hired once you are a manager. Some industries have more management positions to offer than others. Some of these include sales, retail, and product management positions. The reason is that they involves a number of people for every team, so naturally after enough years, someone would be promoted to manager. When you are searching online for management positions, remember that depending on the industry and taking into consideration the economy, you may have to compete with hundreds of applicants. Management jobs are also often outsourced to recruiting firms, which make it even more difficult to hear about open positions with your favorite companies. When looking to be a manager at a company, most people advise that you be willing to take a lower position with less pay and work your way up. This concept of “doing your time” can be very effective, however often does take two to three years for it to be fully effective. If you really love a company and want to be a leader in that industry with that brand, you most certainly need to be willing to put in the time. |
