Questions to Ask Yourself Before you go Freelance

Is this going to be your full time gig or more of a hobby? This question is often skipped but really should be addressed before you get started. Are you making your freelance job a supplement to a more 9 to 5 work situation or is the plan to make your freelance activities your full-time gig? This question helps establish the tone for all of the other questions. It helps you set realistic expectations as far as how much money you need to make, how many hours you need to work and what kind of resources you need. Be sure you are honest with yourself on this one. If going at it part-time for a few months, sets you up to go at freelance full-time, then take the time to get things in order.

Do you have a financial buffer to hold you over while you get started? Don’t just say yes to this one. Instead you need to sit down with your bills, and adjust your budget. The biggest mistake here is to trust your gut on this. If you think you have enough money then prove it yourself by setting out spending reports and templates for all of the resources and tools you will need. You will be amazed at how quickly things add up when you go into freelancing and to work for yourself. Be sure you don’t get caught off guard and have the money talk with yourself first.

Do you have the support team in place? This is a great question to ask yourself before working freelance for two very important reasons. One—you will know who you can go to when things start to get hard (because they will) and two—it will show you who NOT to go to when things start to get harder. Seriously, there will always be people that fall on the more “stable and grounded” side of the career argument and there is no point in spending your energies trying to convince them to come to your side. Instead you should be spending your time on your jobs and projects. So when you are struggling, be sure you have a sense of the people who support your endeavors and go enjoy a happy hour or dinner with them.

What is your motivation for doing this? Although I may have listed this question last on the list, it’s still super important to know the answer to this one. In fact, I would say this question is the most important for the longevity of a freelance career. All of the others may fall more on the practical side of things, but this one touches on your passion and purpose for going freelance. When you ask yourself, “Why do you want to be a freelancer?” take the answer and write it down. Put that paper somewhere near your desk and think of the answer often, it will help you stay awake during the late nights, and stay dedicated when things get rough.
