Turning A Job Loss into an Opportunity

You can take a deep breath. Often times losing a job is expected. Most of us know our work culture and boss well enough to know when “its” coming. This can cause so much stress and anxiety. We wonder when we are going to be fired. How is our boss going to do it? What will the reason be for you losing your job? And so on. So because there are so many questions surrounding a job loss, be sure to take a minute after you have actually lost your job to take a deep (and well-deserved) breath. No more worrying, now it’s time to make some moves…for you!

Ask yourself the hard questions. This is where a lot of people drop the ball after getting fired. They go into panic mode and just start applying for any job they can get. All they see are bills and no paychecks. Instead of just throwing yourself into another position, take the time after losing your job to ask yourself what you really want to be doing every day, all day long. Ask yourself what you liked about your old job and what you didn’t? What would you have changed? What do you want in your next position at work? In the work culture? In your co-workers? These are all important questions you should ask yourself before you start applying for a new job.

Take the time to really think about them. Basically this part if the follow-up. Even after asking ourselves these questions, we often forget the importance of sticking to them. Don’t take the first job offered if it doesn’t match up with your answers and your gut feeling. Take the time to understand what makes you happy and make sure that matches up with the next step you take on your career path. It’s not just about asking yourself hard questions you have to take action on the answers!

Explore opportunities. Keep in mind there are alternatives to jumping into your next full-time position. You could intern somewhere or audit an office for a day and get a sense of what a position would be like. You can do a lot of investigating after you have been let go from a job. You finally have the time and the energy to put toward understanding what you want your typical work day to look like. This involves a lot of patience and hard work, but what could be better then knowing you are taking the right job for you? Exactly. So take the time to explore new opportunities and use this job loss as a stepping stone into the job of your dreams.
