Tips for Using Job Search Engines

Start with broad search terms.  When you are trying a job search engine for the first time, remember you aren’t 100% sure how their search algorithm goes. So don’t put in a really specific job position like “upper management electronic technician,” instead start with something more broad like “electrician” and see what comes back. You can always adjust your job search again for something more specific. Start broad…you can always re-submit the search with a more detailed title.

Look for advanced search functions. Most search engines have an “advanced search” button or link. This type of search usually involves more criteria. You can add commuting distance or whether you want a freelance, part-time or full-time position, and more. If you know exactly what kind of restrictions you need on your next job position use the advanced search functions to save you both time and sanity during your next job search.

Read the advice they give you. Most job search engines have an About Us section that helps you understand what they are all about, as well as what they hope to give the job searcher. Take the time to read through the job search engine’s advice to their user, often they give tips and advice on how to best utilize the engine itself. This can save you the time of trial and error during your next job search online.

Take notes. As you search for your next career move, be sure to take notes on what you are finding. If you come across a position that sounds interesting, or a job description with certain words that sound like what you want to do—write them down. The same thing goes for the companies that catch your eye. This will save you time when you go to your next job search engine and start searching there. You will have manual filter already built out, and the search queries will be more specific based on what you found that you already like.

Have realistic searching goals. Using a job search engine can be frustrating because so many results come back at once. It’s important to keep in mind that searching for a job is a full-time gig until the right one comes your way. Be realistic when starting your job search and understand there will be times you are let down by the listings—maybe they have expired? Or maybe they are misleading? Just know the right one will come your way if you keep searching!
