Where to Look for Local Job Listings A great place to start when looking for local job listings is to visit your local employment office. Often times companies nearby and agencies with a lot of listings will post with an employment office before spending the money on buying newspaper or online ad space. It’s a great way to get a heads up on job openings before the crowd. Another great option is to search Craigslist by you closest biggest city. If you live in a larger city this could work great for you, since the site has a huge directory of option jobs, however if you live outside a city just search by the largest city near your location. There is still a good chance you can find local jobs by searching the closest metro area for employment opportunities. One that a lot of people actually forget to check is the local university and college websites. This may sound strange to you non-students, but just like the employment office; a lot of companies will actually list with a university before paying to post a job somewhere. Also students are known as a high turnover crowd, so there are always people looking for new opportunities. Companies know this and use it to their advantage by listing with universities and colleges. They either do this on the website under the Career Resource section or they do it manually on a campus’s corkboard somewhere. Take a look, its worth a try. If you feel more comfortable going with a search engine, but are wondering if there is one that specializes in local listings…well there is! Check out FlipDog, a job board that claims to list jobs by closest mileage and relevancy to your location. I’ve heard both good and bad things about the results from a search on the site, but again…it’s definitely worth a try. Speaking of giving something a try… have you checked out our job search yet? We list more than just local job listings, but for those of you seeking out a short commute, feel free to check us out. |
